Hello, Oppo! Let’s have some fun.
While working on the logistics of seeing if I can put on an Oppo Rally this year I got an idea for a similar styled game that most if not all Oppos (or at least U.S. Oppos) will be able to partake in, regardless of location or schedule. Here’s the premise: I will give a list of roadside items to look for that are offbeat, but can be found across the country. For example, I could say something like the Sinclair dinosaur statue (not really because they don’t exist in the east, but that’s one example). There will be a period of a few weeks where Oppos will try to find as many of these items as they can. When an Oppo finds one of these locations they’re to take a photo of the spot and upload it to the weekly hunt post. They must include a Hot Wheels or other portable item in the photo to prove it’s not just a stolen stock photo. Points will be awarded for each find, with bonus points for first to find (to be clear, that’s first to find the individual, not first to find overall. So, for example, first to find the Sinclair dino in Long Beach and first to find the Sinclair dino in Boise would both get bonus points).
Since I can’t guarantee even coverage and convenient proximity for everyone (I mean we’re talking about a nationwide thing here) there will be no prizes to be had aside from bragging rights. The main point of the game isn’t to win as much as it is to get out, have fun, and maybe find some cool stuff you didn’t know about.
I’m already working on a list of locations/landmarks to hunt for. I plan on initiating the game in mid-late spring, depending on my rally schedule. Let me know if you think this sounds like fun.

I can think of just two things of any note on my road trips. Those are the Mississippi River, and this huge weird cross near Effington. Anything else you might list I’ll be useless for.

As neither could be found “nationwide” then I don’t think either of those would qualify. Now if he included Wal-Mart in the list, it would be a real race to see who posted first.

This sounds entertaining, but the amount of time this would require while working a full time job would make it difficult.

That sounds like a great game!

I think you’re misunderstanding the premise, I don’t expect people to go out hunting throughout the entire time the game is active.
I expect people to take one day/afternoon on one of their days off during this 2-3 week span and find the items on the list that are local to them. That’s it. The 2-3 week period is just to ensure that pretty much everyone has at least one free day during the game period.

Ahh, I’m down if we’re limited to one day. It seems like it’d be hard to compete with anyone that has a lot of time to spare that could do it over multiple days.

Multiple days will only be an advantage to those who are also willing to travel to locations a few hundred miles away. I anticipate that all items “local” to people will be able to be cleared in a single day.

I am 100% behind this.
If I happen to be on the road, am I allowed to get multiple cities? Or is that cheating?

I said landmarks that exist across the country. Those are landmarks that each exist in one single location

Can we opt to use something other than a hotwheels also? Like pretty much anything that would be a unique identifier. Perhaps like our own real car if feasible! My Miata is basically a hotwheels anyways.
![]() 02/03/2020 at 20:05 |

Yeah whereas we dont have many walmarts in the los angeles area. Or at least it might take a few hours in traffic to get to the nearest one a few miles away.. But thats actually a decent item that is actually everywhere.

...that are spread across the country...
![]() 02/03/2020 at 20:20 |

I think this sounds amazing. If I can be any help with research (without compromising my ability to take part) just let me know.
I would request the ability to substitute a plush ALF wearing a car shirt for the hotwheels. I think it should be sufficiently distinctive.

Could be interesting, though the winner will be whoever has the most free time. Fun either way, though!
![]() 02/03/2020 at 20:36 |
|
Yes. Spread across the country as in the items on the list exist throughout the country. This is why I used Sinclair gas stations as an example.
![]() 02/03/2020 at 20:41 |
|
Not necessarily, as I said to Eric I expect most people to be able to knock out all the stuff in their vicinity in a single day. The winner will likely simply be whoever has the luck of being in the vicinity of the most items, since there’s no guarantee of even coverage.
That said, winning isn’t meant to matter so much in this case. There’s no prizes to be had or anything, it’s just meant to get people out having fun and maybe finding some cool stuff they didn’t know about.
![]() 02/03/2020 at 20:46 |

I suggested hot wheels because it’s easily portable and fits in a pocket. I can’t guarantee everything on the list will be located where you can get your car in the shot (indoors/away from the road or parking lots/etc). You’re welcome to include your car along with the hot wheels in the photo when possible. Or use some other portable item.
![]() 02/03/2020 at 20:48 |

I can’t guarantee I won’t send you some place that’ll be extremely awkward to walk around with a big stuffed alf, but sure. I’ve updated the post to allow other tokens aside from hot wheels

Ideas:
abandoned cars by decade
Roadside image/statue/kitshe of certain catagories: for example there is a KFC shaped like a giant chicken near me so that would be barnyard animals.
Railroad related catagories, since rails are pretty widespread
Most number of license plates in a single picture
Etc: I absolutely love this idea!

I get that now...
—> An oversize muffler
—> an oversize hand tool
—> an actual rainbow
—> a MacDonald’s sign with an actual number of billions served...
—> a fiberglass Big Boy from the old Elias Brothers days...
—> a dinosaur sculpture
I'll keep thinking...

This is cool, I doubt I’ll make the time to play or help or anything but I like it nonetheless. Let’s do the Canadian monopoly version:
Giant timmies cup
Beaver statue
Giant canoe
Giant Muskoka chair
Canada Goose but you gotta get really close [hiissss]
Street sign named for one of the signatories of Confederation
Ice sculpture (bonus for phallic)
Welcome to
Stuffed moose dressed as a Mountie
An actual Mountie (try not to get tazed)
Someone wearing a parka and shorts simulateously
Bob or Doug McKenzie
A craft brewery that makes a beer with a plaid label
A trans-canada highway sign
A poutine shop
An inukshuk
A steam locomotive
Painting of the queen
Ok I’m stretching now, what else you got fellow hoser
s?

I may or may not already have some of these planned. I also may or may not steal a few

Kilt? Or utilikilt?
![]() 02/03/2020 at 21:30 |
|
I think the best way to un-regionalize it would be to do categories with points for obscurity. For example, your Sinclair statue could become dead gas station chain memorabilia (I would win from the sheer excess of my neighbor ).
![]() 02/03/2020 at 21:42 |
|
The two kilts I’ve hiked in would be closer to a utilikilt than a traditional kilt. One is from a company called Damn Near Kilt Em, and the second was from 5.11 tactical. I’m currently too fat for the 5.11 tactical kilt though.
I do have two traditional kilts and another non-traditional model that’s more suited for street wear.

It would be really cool to get an Oppo rally going. I remember about a year ago a Midwest rally was talked about, but it never came to fruition.

Wow I clicked the Oppo rally button at the top. I totally missed that nobody signed up. Sheesh. No idea how that slipped through the cracks...

Any restaurant with the spelling “Kountry” in the name
At least three historical US flags on display at once.
Two Waffle Houses framed in the same photo (skews heavily to GA/Carolinas)
Used tires for sale
A Stuckeys that’s still open for business
A building that used to be a Stuckeys, but is now something else
A Blockbuster Video location with the UV damage still showing the name

I’m actually in Decatur, but Atlanta is a lot more geo-friendly.
I recall moving to the ATL area a long time ago - landed in Smyrna. Every directional reference (before GPS...) was...”go to the Big Chicken and take a left/right/whatever”.
Maybe we can do an Oppo Atlanta GTG; I know there are others in town.
![]() 02/04/2020 at 14:44 |

I was saving the Big Chicken for you.
There’s an abandoned Kia Rondo on Macland Road by the aquatic center, as of a couple weeks ago. It’s silver and sitting in the woods by the road. Another local automotive landmark.
